Porter attended San Diego State University on a full football scholarship as a lineman, but he had to end his collegiate career early after suffering a shoulder injury in his junior year.

Porter followed his brother to Brooklyn in 2004. A chef at Lloyd’s restaurant, he was employed there. Porter began playing his music for diners. A weekly residency was something he made sure to keep up.

Porter played the Glastonbury Festival that same year, and he did so on the Pyramid Stage. He also appeared in London’s Hyde Park for Radio 2 Live. Eventually, he would make an appearance on the BBC’s “Children in Need” programme. While in London for the 2017 ‘Later… with Jools Holland: Later 25 event’, he gave a performance at the Royal Albert Hall.
